Skumatics Joins GS1

Lawrenceville, NJ - July 12, 2010. GS1 Healthcare US welcomed the following new members to its organization: WL Gore and Associates, Buchanan County Health Center, and Skumatics LLC. Skumatics is the solution provider that will bridge the GDSN data pools and the provider community. Initially, Skumatics will be working with 1SYNC™ and Lawson Software™ to deliver standardized data to the vendor and item master. Providers are invited to pilot other data pools and material management information systems.

Healthcare Sunrise Dates

To improve patient safety and supply chain efficiency, organizations and companies throughout the U.S. healthcare supply chain have announced their support to adopt GS1 Standards by the industry-accepted sunrise dates of 2010 for the GS1 Global Location Number (GLN) to standardize location identification and 2012 for the GS1 Global Trade Item Number® (GTIN®) to standardize product identification. Healthcare providers and suppliers should begin preparing for implementation of "2010 GLN Sunrise" and "2012 GTIN Sunrise" now.

Consulting Services for Electronic Purchasing

We help you with automation and error reduction of the req-to-check process. However, the benefits can only be achieved with a clean item master. But how do you recognize whether you're working with data that needs cleansing? Our consultants cite a number of potential indicators that should be compared to best practices.

First, the facility has a high number of total records in the item master and a high number of vendors represented in the item master. Best practice is 15,000 to 20,000, and less than 750, respectively.

Second, the facility may struggle with data completeness. All items should include vendor name and catalog number, manufacturer name and number, product description and unit of measure. For best practice less than 1 percent of the item file should have this information missing.

Third, the file should include categories associated for effective analysis and ease of searching. Problem indicators involve large numbers of items under the "no categorization," "miscellaneous" or "other" categories.

Fourth, the file may lack a distributor-manufacturer link, which means a large number of distributed products don't have a manufacturer name and number associated with them.
